Universal Design Products
When you’re working on a Universal Design project, selecting the right products is important. You want to choose products that fit your customer’s style preferences as well as their accessibility needs.
What is Universal Design?
Universal Design (U.D.) enables everyone to use a space, system, or product without modifications. A universally-designed product can be used by people regardless of age, size and ability. Whether your customers are planning to remain in their home, want to increase its sale value, or wish to accommodate others, designing for all can accomplish numerous goals.
The Seven Principles of Universal Design
There are seven design concept principles of Universal Design, which are as follows:
- Equitable Use: The design is useful to all.
- Flexibility in Use: The design can be used by those of diverse abilities and preferences.
- Simple and Intuitive Use: The design is easy to understand and use.
- Perceptible Information: The design communicates effectively to the user regardless of the user’s sensory abilities.
- Tolerance for Error: The design allows for accidental or unintended actions while maintaining safety.
- Low Physical Effort: The design requires minimum force to operate it.
- Size and Space for Approach and Use: The design allows for a generous amount of size and space for approach.
Tips for Selecting Universal Design Products:
BATHROOM
Bathroom Sinks:
- A wall-mounted sink creates more space for wheelchairs.
- One-piece sinks limit grout and mold.
Bathroom Faucets:
- A single-lever & touchless faucet is easy to use, and can be operated with one hand.
- A device that limits hot water temperature may be useful.
Showers:
- A Roman shower does not require a door, eliminating barriers.
- A built-in shower seat can be stylish and useful.
- Consider a low threshold entry to the shower for wheelchairs.
Bathtubs:
- A bathtub with a rising wall can be used by almost everyone.
- Temperature control devices prevent scalding.
- A tub faucet with a single mixer control allows for smaller hand movements.
Bathroom Vanities:
- Set counter height higher to require less bending.
- Contrast the countertop with the floor for improved visual accuracy.
- Organizational components can be installed for easy object removal (storage totes, deep drawers, etc).
Toilets:
- A toilet of 18 inches or higher is more comfortable for most people to use.
Medicine Cabinets:
- Make sure medicine cabinets have good lighting.
- Consider U-shaped pulls for easy gripping
Bathroom Accessories:
- Toilet and shower grab bars come in a variety of colors and styles.
- Soap dispenser pumps are sturdy and can be attached to the countertop.
KITCHEN
Kitchen Sinks:
- Stainless steel sinks are sturdy and easy to clean.
- Double sinks give you extra space, reducing wet spots on the counter and floor.
- Cutting boards mounted above wastebaskets or garbage disposals prevent messy floors
Kitchen Faucets:
- Single lever & touchless faucets require less physical work to operate.
